How Disney will force Netflix to change streaming

By late 2019, Disney has promised to launch its own online streaming service, further complicating the options for viewers who just want to watch their favorite films and TV online. The competition between streaming services has been great for consumers, so far. Outlets like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Shudder, and Filmstruck have been ramping up content and giving us a lot for very little money, but they have the power to take it away too (password lockdowns, pull content). As corporate consolidation heats up, that deal may get a lot worse — and fast.

    If u a streaming junky just pay 30 per month over 3 providers.

    If u an occasional junky, just subscribe to netflix 1 month the next hbo go then another. Then back to netflix…

    Doing this just makes it worse for everyone. Streaming is a millennial market and millennials are not willing to pay for all of those different streaming services.

    A big assumption here is that Disney is going to be as technically equipped as Netflix. Netflix is a tech company first and then a entertainment company. Disney, on the other hand, will have to solve all the streaming problems on their own. As more and more subscribers start using Disney, it will start seeing real scalability issues which only Youtube, Netflix have been able to solve. Amazon video is catching up. This doesn't take into account the recommendation engine / machine learning efforts Netflix took. In a nutshell, for Disney's streaming service to be a huge success they must have two things. 1. A really good tech team like Youtube and Netflix 2. Really good infrastructure like Amazon web services.

    I’ll probably go Netflix for a month and binge new shows/seasons then switch to Disney and repeat

    Companies that produce media having more money to spend sounds like a good thing to me. Supporting creators is kinda the main reason to subscribe to a streaming service, since piracy is cheaper and usually more convenient.

    Some people are unfortunately going to fall into the same traps as they did with Cable TV. They're going to subscribe to multiple services, while not realizing they can't watch them all at the same time. The argument can of course be made that, "Family members want to watch different things on different services," but the idea this Verge video tries to conclude with "you're going to have to pay more," is narrow and absurd. Big companies want you to feel they control your spending, but it's always up to the consumer how they spend their money.

    What this article/video doesn't present, is what rocked the cable industry. People found they had a choice to cut the cord and watch a large amount of content (most commercial free), without paying huge premiums or opting into tons of things they didn't want to watch. Today, if one plays it smart, you can subscribe to just one (or maybe 2 services), and swap for other services, month to month, to access other content you want to see. You can easily make it so you're only ever paying for 1 or 2 services at a time. We're no longer bound by a cable subscription design structure, but big companies what to lull everyone back into buying multiple services under a false pretense that you're going to miss out on something.

    If I want to watch the latest Star Trek series on CBS, fine, this month I'll pay $6 for that service and drop Netflix for a month. I find in most cases, I can jump right back on Netflix the next month and still have access to most, if not all, the content I still want to see. And will Netflix try to threaten me with raising my renewed subscription by a dollar? Sure they will! And will Netflix try to warn me, if I cancel, I won't be "grandfathered" into a lower rate? Sure they will, but lest we forget, Netflix has proven they'll end "grandfathering," even for their oldest and most loyal fans, without hesitation. Don't be bullied by these tactics.

    The Disney's, Hulu's, CBS's, and many other big companies are going to split their services, for sure, but some of us will be smart enough now to know that if there's a show on Netflix we want to see, we can drop an existing service and pay for a month of Netflix. We don't have to pay month after month for multiple service to enjoy all the content, no matter how many narrow reports on this subject we hear. I love you Verge, but come on!

    When i have to pay three or four different services every month to enjoy shows i want to watch and there are great raw blu ray encoder in the internet, I'm starting to download every show freely from every forum and torrent websites.

    This kind of "not-centralize" services are bad for customers…

    So Disney might be the downfall for streaming then? Also can you imagine if Disney decide to buy the other streaming sites. Sheesh
