For today’s Speaker Spotlight we have London Venture Partners associate Jon Bellamy, who will host a talk entitled ‘Venture Capital in the Games Industry’.

PocketGamer.biz: Tell us a bit about the company.

Jon Bellamy: LVP is a venture capital seed fund with a difference – we’re operating experts in the games sector and we only ever invest in the games ecosystem.

That means we bring real experience and deep understanding. We speak the same language, share the same references, understand the same challenges – and we believe in the same vision.

We’ve been privileged to be among the earliest investors in Supercell, Unity, Playfish, NaturalMotion and a host of other amazing games companies that have created over $13 billion in value.

What does your role entail?

Meeting and investing in the most ambitious founders with the most exceptional of teams and grandest of visions.

Why did you want to work in the games industry?

Because it’s the best industry on earth.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to get into it?

The harsh truth is that the world is full of people who love the games industry, so your passion alone will be expected; not a differentiating factor.

Differentiate yourself from the crowd by deeply understanding the industry and how it is developing over time.

What are your thoughts on the industry in the last 12 months?

Extremely exciting; PC distribution is an open contest and developers are primed to benefit, and AR-native devices are set to hit two billion globally in the next two years thanks to ARKit and ARCore.

The world’s industries continue to gamify (everything from automobiles to healthcare) and advancements in computer vision, decentralised computation and game streaming (not live-streaming!) grant us a glimpse of the near future.

What major trends do you predict in the next 12 months?

The potential benefits of game streaming will become better understood and recognised, the PC ‘store wars’ will approach crescendo and distribution norms will look very different from yesteryear.

Meanwhile, the network-LTV approach to user acquisition will further consolidate the entrenched networks on mobile.

How has the games industry changed since you first started?

Enormously. Business models, monetisation frameworks, distribution channels, design frameworks (MMO-ification), analytics and UA (think influencer channels and their sudden ubiquity).

Which part of the Connects event are you most looking forward to and why?

Meeting exceptional founders that I’d like to invest in!
