Red Dead Redemption 2 players throwing hate messages at real person named Colm O’Driscoll

Red Dead Redemption II players have been venting their anger by sending a real person named Colm O’ Driscoll hate messages online.

Since the game’s release last month, a man from Ireland who shares the name with Red Dead Redemption 2’s despised antagonist has been receiving explicit messages from players believing (or hopefully, pretending) he’s the nefarious gang leader.

Taking to Twitter, Colm posted some of the messages he’s received, writing: ‘So it turns out I share the same name as a #RedDeadRedemption2 character and now I’m receiving hate mail online.’

While Colm appears to take the messages in jest, some of them are pretty worrying, with one expressing how he’s on their ‘list of n***** to shoot on sight’.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Colm said he doesn’t even have a PlayStation or Xbox, adding: ‘I find the whole thing kinda funny, but the messages are starting to get annoying.

‘A little part of me worries that some of these people are so emotionally invested in the game that they’re starting to lose perception of what’s real and what isn’t.’

The fictional Colm O’Driscoll acts as the rival gang leader to protagonist Arthur Morgan and Dutch’s group, with O’ Driscoll members often instigating firefights within the open world.

Let’s just hope players can differentiate reality from Red Dead Redemption 2’s detailed world, otherwise baths will be an eternal disappointment.
